A Walk to Remember - Tomorrow
St Mary's Hospice, Ulverston, will hold its women-only 'A Walk to Remember' around Barrow on May 14th.
The sponsored 11 kilometre walk, now the Hospice's most successful fund-raising event, takes place at night.
Last year, 630 women who took part in the event raised around £50,000.
The Hospice needs to raise around £5,000 per day to continue providing specialised supportive
and palliative care for people with life limiting conditions in South Cumbria.
This year, organisers are aiming to top last year's total by recruiting 1,000 women to take part.
Zoe Guest, fund-raising manager for St Mary's said: "We'd like to get 1,000. It's quite ambitious, but we are hopeful.
"The event gets bigger and better every year. Everyone who takes part really enjoy themselves on the night.
They wear pyjamas and do the walk together in groups of colleagues or friends. It has a really nice atmosphere."
It costs £10 to register to take part in the sponsored walk. Full details are on the Hospice website.
Men's Health Week 2010
The theme of this year’s Men’s Health Week (June 14th – 20th) is physical activity.
Barrow Borough Council, through the Park Leisure Centre, is co-ordinating numerous activities throughout the week
and would like local organisations to become involved. The level of involvement would depend entirely on yourselves.
Your organisation could promote its activities and facilities or could even run taster sessions at your facility during the week.
This will give you access to free publicity and possibly increase your membership.
You may already be doing something that particular week, so why not link it to Men's Health Week?
It would be really good if Barrow Borough could put together a series of events, activities and sessions t
hroughout the week, to raise the profile of local organisations and Men's Health.
The Council is trying to co-ordinate lots of different activities and events and would like to hear
from you by Friday 28th May 2010.
If you would like to get involved or would like further information, please contact
Mike Otto, Health Improvement Officer on 01229 876496 or by email.
