Piel Island Walk and Beach Clean at Piel Island - 19th June
Guided low-tide walk across the sands to Piel Island, the ancient stronghold of the Monks of Furness.
Once you reach the island, you can explore at your own leisure, enjoy the hospitality of the King of Piel
at his bar and burger van, or take part in a beach clean organised by the Mountain Bay Partnership.
The walk starts from and returns to Snab Point on Walney Island.
The walk is tidal, so anyone wishing to take part must be at Snab Point by 09.00.
Anyone arriving later may not be able to join the guided walk.
The start of the walk is muddy and we will have to wade through 1 or 2 shallow gullys, so you are
advised to wear footware that you don't mind getting wet! Because we are crossing the sands,
this walk is not suitable for wheelchairs, prams or push-chairs or for people with mobility difficulties.
To reach Snab Point, take A590 to Barrow and follow signs for Walney Island.
Cross the bridge to Walney Island and at the end of the bridge turn left.
Follow road for approximately 0.75 mile and turn left on to Cart Lane.
Drive south on Cart Lane for approximately 3 miles until you reach Snab Point.
Look out for the yellow road signs marking the route from the end of the Walney Bridge.
Anyone wishing to join the beach clean but not able to make the walk can reach Piel Island
by ferry from Roa Island. Roa Island can be reached by No.10 bus from either Barrow in Furness or Ulverston.

Barrow Sports Council 'Kits for Malawi' Appeal
Barrow Sports Council has launched an appeal for unwanted sports kit to send to villages and townships in Malawi.
Local Councillor Barry Doughty made links with Malawi through a youth work project.
Barry said that very few people in Malawi can afford proper kit, especially full team kits.
"Providing kits helps to enoucourage healthy activity and community spirit in an area of severe deprivation
and ill health through AIDS and HIV.
When I brought this to the attention of Barrow Sports Council, they immediately offered to launch an appeal.
The next day I was told they had already got two full football strips for me.
The appeal is for any full team strips for any sport - football, rugby, netball, hockey, volleyball.
Anything really. The only condition is that they need to be for a full team.
What is second hand and in need of replacement to us can be a fantastic strip for people with no money."
Barrow Sports Council Chair Tony Callister handed over the first two strips for Barry to send to Malawi.
Tony said "when teams get new kit, a lot of them probably throw the old one away or
just leave them in a bin bag somewhere.
This is a great way to help people less fortunate than us."
The strips go to an organisation called Active Youth Initiative for Social Enhancement (AYISE)
who then distribute them to needy areas.
If you have a strip to give away, they can be left with Barrow Sports Council at the Nan Tait Centre, Abbey Road
or ring Emma on 407319 or Derek on 407575.

Walney RLFC Under 8's have kindly donated their old kit, thank you boys!
