Play like the Pro’s

Here at Barrow Raiders we are constantly striving to help improve the local levels of skill and talent, with this in mind we are pleased to announce the launch of our latest community involvement project Play like the Pro’s.

The project is divided up into sections, with the main focus on enhancing the skills of young players utilizing the current crop of Professional Rugby League Players we have at our disposal here at Barrow RLFC.

Not all the skills we are aiming to improve would necessarily be out on the pitch though, for example, we also can utilize the gymnasium and our plyometrics rooms.

The sessions shall be approximately 60 minutes long, consisting of a warm up, demonstration of the subject skill, an explanation and break down of the subject skill, some activity practice time, and a summary. There will be a need for boots in wet conditions and wearing training clothes as all the subjective skills require some form of participation.

Each session is aimed at an age range of 12-16, although everybody is welcome, we just feel the sessions would be more beneficial to the mentioned age range.

Which players are to be involved?

In our attempt to maximize the impact this can have on the local players we have decided on using the following players:

Nathan Mossop, Ned Catic, Martin Ostler, Jamie Rooney, Michael Knowles, Andy Bracek, Zeb Luisi, Liam Campbell, Chris Young and James Coyle. Although it is possible other players may also be involved.

The range of skills that could be passed on is exhaustive, but to mention a few here are some examples:

Dummy Half Pass, Holding Lines, Tackle Techniques, Passing Techniques, Speed Workshops, Wrestling, Ball Security, Kicking, Catching, Footwork, Gym Sessions, Fitness for Rugby.

The session will be conducted with one Professional Player per session, with an opportunity, after the session, to liaise with the Professional.

We here at Barrow RLFC see this as being a great opportunity for the local youngsters to engage and learn from some of the best Professionals within the Championship, all at a pocket money price of 2 pounds per session. The sessions will be hosted all the way through the summer holiday period with a look to becoming a more permanent part of the activities that take place here at Craven Park throughout the year.

The Community games of Rugby League are, we feel, very important in the future outline of the Club and it is to this end we are striving to help improve the Community Game at the very smallest level, right up to eligibility of signing for one of our teams. It is in this respect we have introduced these Play like the Pro’s sessions to help progress the local young amateur players levels of skill.

Being coached by a current Professional player, linked to certain skills, is a fantastic opportunity to learn how a ball is carried into contact or what sort of weights program should one follow that is specific to Rugby League for example. It is in this light that we, here at Barrow RLFC, hope to engage young people between the ages of 12 and 16 whom may also be playing for their School, Club, Service Area or Regional Area, or even perhaps where they may not even play for anyone at the moment, in which case they could be signposted to a local club and perhaps even being put on a pathway to become the next local Rugby League Professional for Barrow RLFC.
