Barrow Raiders Ladies have confirmed the signing of outside back Blossom Howell ahead of the 2026 season.
The 20-year-old, who was born and raised in Barrow, is a beneficiary of the club’s female pathway, having played for the Under 19s and Raiders Ladies Reserves before being given an opportunity in the Betfred Women’s Super League.
Starting her rugby league journey at the age of eight, Howell went on to play rugby union before returning to the 13-woman code, joining the Raiders Ladies Reserves midway through the 2023 campaign.
She was crowned Young Player of the Year at the end of that season and earned the award once again last year.
Howell has also impressed on dual-registration at Ulverston, convincing head coach Amanda Wilkinson to bring her into the Raiders Ladies first team group ahead of the upcoming season.
“Last season with Ulverston was probably the best I’ve had during my life,” she said.
“It wasn’t easy, but I feel like in the past year, I’ve got so much more confident on and off the pitch with both the Ulverston girls and Barrow girls.
“Being a part of Barrow Raiders has always been something I’ve wanted. I’ve been going to games since I started playing, so when they put the trials on, I knew that’s where I wanted to be.
“I’ve worn the Barrow shirt as a supporter, but now I want my own shirt with my own name on.”
Discussing the impact that the Raiders Ladies pathway had on her personal journey, Howell added: “In 2023, I was so anxious that I could barely even engage with the team on the bus to matches, but slowly I came out of my shell.
“It’s always nice having people around you who appreciate what you bring, both on and off the pitch.
“All I have to say about the programme is that it works, so to all the younger players, stick at it and you’ll be up there in no time.”
Barrow Ladies head coach Amanda Wilkinson said: “It’s really great to see Blossom, who was born and bred in Barrow, progress through the pathways and go on to earn a chance in our Super League squad.
“She is really proud to represent her hometown club, and I’m really excited to see what she can bring to the team.”
On Saturday 17 January, Barrow Ladies will once again be holding open trials ahead of the 2026 season.
The trials are a good opportunity for players who wish to be part of the Raiders Ladies setup, with the chance to represent both the first team and Under 19s.
