Barrow Raiders have handed young prop forward Stevie Watson his first professional deal ahead of the 2026 season.

The 17-year-old will link up with the first team on a permanent basis, having impressed during the club’s opening pre-season friendly against North Wales Crusaders.

Watson was first invited to train with the Furness Raiders Development Academy ahead of last season.

He was invited back down for the 2025/26 season and excelled in Furness Raiders’ opening games of the campaign in the College Cup.

The Furness Raiders pathway has given many talented young players from the local area a first team opportunity over the years, and it is hoped that Watson can be the latest to establish himself in the men’s game.

“I feel really privileged to get the chance to sign for Barrow,” he said.

“I would like to thank everyone at Millom and Furness Raiders for getting me into this position. I can’t wait to keep learning from Paul Crarey and his coaching team this year, and hopefully prove my worth in the Championship.”

Barrow Raiders head coach Paul Crarey said: “I’m delighted to see young academy prospect Stevie Watson agree terms and sign his first professional deal with the club.

“Stevie has been monitored during pre-season training and played some big minutes in the friendly against North Wales recently. A big, raw, powerful middle, we feel he has the potential to be a future cornerstone of the Barrow pack.

“The Furness Raiders academy system has given us many players since its inception, and was specifically created for this purpose.

“We will continue to promote local academy prospects, as it’s the most sustainable way we can build our teams without the big budgets that many others have in our division.”

Director of rugby Andy Gaffney said: “As I mentioned when Trent Ruddy signed a couple of months ago, to ensure the longevity of the club, it is crucial that we recognise talent and promote from within.

“We feel Stevie has all the attributes needed to make a real mark on the professional game. He plays with a fearlessness and determination which can’t be taught, and I’m sure that when the opportunity comes this season, he will grab it with both hands.

“Having seen him mature and grow first-hand since he linked up with Furness Raiders, I’m confident that Stevie will be a big player for us as the years progress.”
