Crarey: “We have to learn to grind more”

Barrow Raiders Head Coach Paul Crarey has said his side has to learn to complete sets after their defeat at London Broncos.

It was a return to losing ways in the Betfred Championship, after last week’s big win over Bradford Bulls.

They lost 30-16 at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, despite taking an early lead through Luke Broadbent’s try.

Crarey was happy with the start, but was unhappy that they went away from the game plan and got into a battle with the Broncos.

“I think the first 20 minutes we dominated possession,” he said. “We ran our shape, and scored a nice try, and then we went away from it.

“10 minutes before half-time, we pressed the self-destruct button. Conceded a try, went four behind and then we had a short kick-off that didn’t go the 10. That put us under pressure, and they scored off that set.

“We went into half-time, and I thought we put a nice shape on, and scored a try to get us back in the game.

“Ryan Johnston then gets sin binned five metres off his goal-line with the ball in his hand. From there, they scored and took the game away from us, and we lost control again.

“We got into a frantic battle, and we said we didn’t want to do that. They play on transition, and work plays on offloads. They got some cheap tries on our left side.

“We walked in at the end, but it was too little, too late. I’m bitterly disappointed after last week – we are just playing outside the box at the moment.”

Crarey said the side ultimately needs to make sure they are completing sets at a higher rate to ensure they get results.

Last week, against Bradford, the Raiders completed 88-per-cent of their sets, compared with around 72-per-cent this time around.

“Once we get over that 80-per-cent, like last week, we will win”, he added.

“We need to learn that we need to grind a little more rather than kick the ball short, and little chips over 50 metres out in the wind, it allows them field position.

“We need to stop doing those things and play consistent percentage football, and we will get a result.”

He also praised his opponents at the end of the match, praising their athleticism throughout the game.

Crarey said: “They were pretty good today. All credit to them, they played really well to how they do play and got us on a lot of offloads.

“They’ll never go away, and they just scrap. And if you get into a scrap with them, then there will only be one winner and that’s them.”
