Barrow Raiders fell to a last-gasp 12-6 defeat at home to Batley Bulldogs in Round 17 of the Betfred Championship.

In a game where the Raiders lost a number of bodies through injury, it looked like they would pick up something for their immense efforts before the Bulldogs scored in the dying moments to snatch both competition points.

After a scoreless first half during which Paul Crarey lost Sam Brooks, Nathan Mossop and Greg Worthington to injury, plus Josh Wood to a HIA which he subsequently passed, the Raiders were quick out of the blocks in the second 40 and posted the afternoon’s first points.

Charlie Emslie latched onto a Jarrod Sammut kick and was stopped short of the line, but the ball was swung left soon after, and Luke Broadbent was perfectly placed to touch down in the corner for his eighth try of the season.

That lead would be erased before the hour mark though, as a converted James Meadows try made it 6-4 to the visitors.

Ryan Shaw soon levelled the scores with a penalty goal 19 minutes from time, but having missed the chance to land a late drop-goal, the Raiders were dealt a crushing blow as Batley went up the other end and scored, courtesy of a powerful close-range finish from Josh Hodson.

Next up for the Raiders is a trip to Sheffield Eagles on Sunday 9 July.
