Barrow Raiders fell to a disappointing 37-22 defeat to Newcastle Thunder in Round 11 of the Betfred Championship.

An uncharacteristic display from the Raiders saw them fall well short in the north-east as Newcastle picked up their seventh league win of the season.

Paul Crarey’s side were trailing by 18 by the time Ryan King charged over for the Raiders’ first points.

A Will Roberts penalty stretched the hosts’ lead to 20-6 at half-time, with Brad Ward’s second try of the afternoon extended that advantage further after the break.

Luke Broadbent did go over for the Raiders shortly before the hour mark, but it proved to be momentary respite as Joe Law touched down six minutes later.

Barrow responded again through Luke Cresswell, but King Vuniyayawa went over for the afternoon’s final try to make it 36-22 and Taylor Pemberton added a late drop-goal to rub further salt in the wounds.

An immediate response is needed from the Raiders, who welcome Oldham to the Speed Competitions Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
