Barrow Raiders fell to a 40-18 defeat at home to Oldham in Round 12 of the Betfred Championship.

Despite a quick start from the Raiders, Oldham ultimately proved too strong on the day as they recorded their seventh successive win in all competitions.

Inside the opening minute of the first half, Barrow posted first points. The ball was shifted left to find Tee Ritson, who raced down the wing before feeding the supporting Luke Cresswell on his inside.

It got even better for Barrow, as shortly after Roughyeds captain Matty Wildie was sin-binned for dissent, Ritson went over for a try of his own down the left.

That saw a 12-0 lead go the Raiders’ way, and that remained the score as the game approached the half-hour after Oldham saw three potential try opportunities go awry.

Eventually they did turn pressure into points, however, as Adam Milner powered his way over.

Shortly after, Riley Dean spotted a gap in the defensive line to go over, although his missed conversion meant it stayed 12-10 in the Raiders’ favour.

But it wouldn’t remain that way for long, Ewan Moore rising highest to collect a high kick from Dean in the air and touch down.

Leading 16-12 at half-time, Oldham went further clear three minutes after the break as Luke Forber receiving the ball wide left before feeding Jake Bibby on the inside to score, despite the best efforts of Luke Broadbent to deny him.

Although Ritson scored his second of the afternoon to pull the Raiders back to within six with just over an hour gone, the home side soon began to tire and Oldham pressed home their advantage inside the final 15 minutes.

Ben Davies crossed in the right corner and Dean’s conversion made it 28-18, before Josh Drinkwater dummied his way over and Dean sent Moore over unopposed for his second try of the game in the closing stages.

The Raiders are now without a game until a rare midweek outing on Wednesday 20 May, when they head to South Yorkshire to face Doncaster.
