On Wednesday evening, Barrow Raiders hosted over 85 young players from across the local area, as part of the club’s brand-new Lions Player Development Programme.
The initiative, which is designed to support rugby league skills development for young people in school years 7/8, has been hailed as a rousing success following its launch at the Northern Competitions Stadium.
The Lions Development Programme is being led by the Advantage! Barrow Raiders Community Foundation, and sessions will take place from 5-6:30pm on the following dates:
- Wednesday 10 July
- Wednesday 17 July
- Wednesday 24 July
- Wednesday 31 July
- Wednesday 7 August
- Wednesday 14 August
- Wednesday 21 August
On Wednesday, Advantage! Barrow session co-ordinator and first team player Ellis Gillam was joined by a number of team-mates, who came along to support the launch of the programme.
Luke Broadbent, Luke Cresswell, Brad Walker, Finn McMillan, Max Clarke, Ryan Johnston Razor Silva, Charlie Emslie and Delaine Gittens-Bedward gave up their time to pass on their advice and knowledge to the young people who attended.
Discussing the importance of the Lions Development Programme, Gillam said: “Young players need a pathway into the sport, and programmes like this are a fantastic way of enabling them to pick up a rugby ball and develop their skills.
“Barrow is a rugby-mad town, and if we want more young players to embark on a journey to the professional game, that path needs to start somewhere.
“We are delighted to have received such a fantastic response to the programme and cannot wait to see all these young players develop over the next seven weeks.”
