Barrow Raiders Ladies head coach welcomes reserves launch

Barrow Raiders Ladies head coach Amanda Wilkinson has welcomed the launch of the reserves side and is excited to create a clear pathway to the Super League team.

The reserves have applied to enter RFL competition for 2022, and will be led by head coach Paul Sykes.

“What a positive way to go into Super League, knowing that all the enthusiastic rugby players that didn’t make the squad will stay in the game, compete in a league of their own and be part of the Rugby Football League pathway for women and girls,” Wilkinson said.

“The interest and passion for rugby league in Cumbria is growing, and young girls with a passion to play now have something to aim for with two teams.

“I believe a clear pathway and the development of players is crucial in any sport.

“Younger players need the time, both physically and mentally, to develop. And for more mature players who are just not making the mark at this point, it gives them that opportunity to improve, develop as a player and enjoy playing the game while doing so.

“The Raiders have a wealth of experienced and enthusiastic staff and coaches that work in the community with schools to promote rugby league to both boys and girls, and it’s great that both boys and girls can aspire to play for Barrow.

“It’s great to see so many players that have come through the Raiders pathway now playing in the reserves, giving them a chance to develop and push to make the first team.”

Paul Sykes will head up the new reserve side, having worked with the Ladies team as an assistant for some time.

He will receive support from members of the Advantage! Community team, including men’s first team players Tee Ritson, Ellis Gillam and Anton Iaria.

“It was an easy decision to appoint Paul as head coach,” Wilkinson added. “He’s such a committed guy with a passion for the club, the ladies and rugby league.

“The ladies have so much respect for him and I’m sure he will bring the best out in the players.

“I will share my tactical and technical thoughts and structures from the first team with Paul as we look to work closely throughout the season.

“Paul will also be involved with the Super League team as we work to create a one club – two teams environment, sharing good practice, cultures and creating a positive environment where players can develop in both teams and I’m looking forward to sharing this experience with Paul.”
