Barrow Raiders forward Jack Billington insists the squad will travel to Toulouse Olympique and play with freedom, given the short turnaround they face.

A last-gasp victory on Monday night saw the Raiders pick up two crucial competition points away at local rivals Whitehaven, but they’re straight back into the heat of Betfred Championship action with a trip to the South of France in Round 23 on Saturday afternoon.

Billington, who featured in Monday’s win from the bench, admits the squad know the challenge they’re up against at the Stade Mazicou.

“It’s going to be a challenge going to Toulouse, especially with the short turnaround that we’ve got,” he said.

“With our run-in, and coming up against the teams in and around us between now and the end of the season, we’re going to go to Toulouse with a bit of freedom and give it a good dig.

“We know we’ve got an important run between now and the end of the season, so hopefully we can get some more points under our belt.”

The Raiders enter the game off the back of a huge derby day triumph, as a late Ryan Johnston drop-goal proved enough for a 23-22 win at the LEL Arena.

Despite not being from the area, the on-loan Huddersfield Giants forward says a magnificent performance against local opposition has capped off what has been an already-enjoyable first few weeks in Raiders colours.

“It was a special feeling,” Billington admitted.

“To say I’m not from Barrow or Whitehaven, it was a really exciting game to be a part of. You can feel all of the passion and emotion that the lads have, and getting one over Whitehaven felt even sweeter.

“It was a tough game because of all the animosity involved. It seemed like a good challenge which I feel I managed to step up to.

“I’ve loved my time at the club so far, everybody has been great.

“The lads have been really good, trying to get me involved with everything and making sure all of the plays we put on are making sense. I just can’t wait to kick on now.”
