Barrow Raiders advanced to Week 3 of the Betfred Championship play-offs after a 26-10 victory at home to Sheffield Eagles in Sunday’s play-off eliminator.
The Raiders got the job done on home soil kept their season alive, setting up another trip to Doncaster in a winner-takes-all tie next Sunday (3pm kick-off).
Ryan Johnston’s boot opened the scoring with five minutes gone, his penalty goal nudging the Raiders two points ahead.
The first try of the afternoon came shortly before the midway point of the opening 40, with Andrew Bulman the scorer.
Straight from a scrum, the ball was shifted right towards Curtis Teare, who drew in the Sheffield winger then fed Bulman to race 20m down the touchline and dive over in the corner.
Sheffield hauled themselves back to within four points before the interval, catching the Raiders asleep down the short side as Billy Walkley was sent strolling over in the corner.
The Raiders took a double-figure lead 10 minutes into the second half when Greg Richards steamrolled his way over close to the line.
The home side were over again on the hour. Keeping the ball alive on tackle five, Jarrad Stack flicked a pass away to Joe Bullock and he raced over to the left of the posts.
Sheffield gave themselves a glimmer of hope soon after, Kieran Gill picking up a loose ball inside his own half and racing away to score under the posts.
But with seven minutes to go, top try scorer for the season, Ryan King, came up with the play that clinched victory.
In typical King fashion, the powerful back-rower skipped to the right then left before surging through the attempted tackle of Jack Bussey to bag his 17th try of the season.
Now attention turns to Sunday 20 September, and another trip to the Eco-Power Stadium as the Raiders look to right the wrongs of their heavy defeat in Week 1 of the play-offs.
