Barrow Raiders gave Oldham a scare in the quarter-finals of the 1895 Cup but ultimately fell to a 38-24 defeat at Boundary Park.
Having faced off twice already this year, winning one game piece, the trilogy bout lived up to the hype and saw 11 tries shared on a warm afternoon in Greater Manchester.
The Raiders came into the game down on numbers – only being able to name a 20-man squad earlier in the week – but gave a good account of themselves throughout.
A slow start saw Paul Crarey’s side fall 10-0 behind, but the response was an excellent one. On-loan winger Tee Ritson and Charlie Emslie scored converted tries, either side of a long-range Ryan Shaw penalty goal, to put the visitors 14-10 ahead at half-time.
The second half, like the first, saw Oldham come out of the blocks quickly, with tries from Lewis Baxter and Jack Johnson restoring their advantage.
But Shaw latched onto Luke Broadbent’s delicate kick through to score in the corner on his 250th appearance, then Tee Ritson produced a moment of magic to make it 24-20 in the Raiders’ favour.
The afternoon, however, would belong to Oldham, who scored three tries without reply in the final quarter to move to within one game of Wembley.
Up next for the Raiders is a trip to Widnes Vikings on Sunday in Round 6 of the Betfred Championship.
