A much-changed Barrow Raiders fell to a heavy defeat at Betfred Championship leaders Wakefield Trinity in their penultimate game of the 2024 season.
Trinity proved to be too strong across the park, against a Raiders side that included plenty of fringe players, including Furness Raiders captain Finn McMillan, Max Anderson-Moore and Fin Dutton-Rosconie, who was initially named as 18th man but came in to make his first team debut after Ryan Johnston’s late withdrawal.
Wakefield took a healthy 24-0 lead going into the break, scoring four converted tries. Oliver Pratt was one of those who crossed, following on from earlier scores from Jay Pitts, Ky Rodwell and Max Jowitt.
Pratt would go on to complete his hat-trick after half-time, with Jowitt also adding another try and three goals to his tally – completing a personal haul of 22 points for the evening.
There was also time for Lachlan Walmsley to complete the scoring for Trinity, who have lost just once all season and sit 13 points clear at the top of the division.
Still, the Raiders’ fate is in their own hands as they look to avoid a third-bottom finish and subsequent promotion/relegation decider against the winner of the Betfred League 1 play-offs.
Victory over Widnes Vikings on the final day this coming Sunday would see them finish 11th and avoid the drop. In fact, Paul Crarey’s side only need to match Swinton Lions’ result at Bradford Bulls to ensure their safety.
