Barrow Raiders got their 2024 season off to a winning start as 28 unanswered points helped them past Cumbrian rivals Workington Town in their 1895 Cup group stage opener.
In blustery conditions at the Fibrus Community Stadium, the Raiders’ quality shone through as they picked up their first competitive win of the year.
It took little over 10 minutes for captain Jarrad Stack to bulldoze his way over for the afternoon’s opening try, and it didn’t take long for Ryan Johnston to latch onto the end of a kick through the line, with his acrobatic score and Ryan Shaw’s conversion stretching the lead to 12-0 at half-time.
The second half had barely begun when Stack bagged his second of the day, and the Raiders made it back-to-back scores not long after as Max Clarke combined with Johnston to score on his competitive debut.
Hooker Aaron Smith, making his first appearance for the club since joining from Leigh Leopards last week, capped off a fine individual performance by burrowing his way over close to the line.
Dave Eccleston pulled some points back for Workington inside the final 10 minutes, making it 28-4 in the Raiders’ favour, before an incredible Shaw penalty goal from inside his own half brought up the 30-point mark for Paul Crarey’s side.
Chris Taylor dummied his way over for another late consolation for the hosts, but it wouldn’t be enough to take the gloss off what was a thoroughly professional display from the Raiders.
Their 1895 Cup group stage campaign continues next Sunday with a trip to Betfred Championship rivals Whitehaven.
