Barrow Raiders suffered a defeat on the road as they were beaten 28-14 at the hands of York RLFC Knights in the Betfred Championship.

The Raiders would be hit with a setback early on as the hosts came firing out of the blocks with Myles Harrison diving over in the right wing after just one minute.

An error by the Knights 30 metres from the line allowed the Raiders back into the game, new Salford Red Devils loanee Amir Bourouh spun and jinked over the line to level the scores at 4-4, with Sammut converting to give the visitors the lead.

Forward Jesse Dee pounced on a loose ball in the corner to press the home side’s advantage as the game approached half-time, but the Knights were down to 12 men after Jon Luke Kirby was sent to the sin bin, allowing Shane Toal to crash over on the wing to tie the scores 10-10 at the interval.

The Raiders started quickly in the second half – Jarrod Sammut made a break and darted 40 metres, but spilled the ball when he was eventually tackled.

York soon found their rhythm and hit the Raiders with two quick-fire tries from Jon Luke Kirby and Ata Hingano to take the score to 22-10.

Shane Toal would give the Raiders a glimmer of hope as he capitalised on a period of pressure from the Raiders, crashing over for his second try of the game with just 15 minutes remaining.

However, the hosts would have the final say in the proceedings as Joe Brown collected the ball from a Raiders chip and chase and ran the full length of the field to secure two points for the Knights.

The Raiders are next in action at home to Newcastle Thunder on Sunday 5 March (3:00pm kick-off).
