Barrow Raiders first team players Charlie Emslie and Brett Carter recently made the decision to chop off their infamous mullets, in support of two very worthy causes.

Following the club’s Betfred Championship season finale against Widnes Vikings, the pair shed their long locks for the Little Princess Trust and St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston.

The Little Princess Trust provides free real-hair wigs to children and young people up to the age of 24, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

They also fund childhood cancer research, searching to find kinder and more effective treatments.

St Mary’s provide care and comfort for patients living with life-shortening illness or long-term conditions, and their families.

They support people from the moment of diagnosis, and their families for longer, providing a crucial service for those who need it most.

The club have also been long-time supporters of St Mary’s Hospice, raising money for the charity through various events held in the MKM Marquee.

“Brett mentioned that he was thinking about donating his hair a few months ago, and I thought that it was a great idea,” Emslie said.

“I did some research about how long it needed to be, and decided that once mine was long enough, I’d do the same.

“It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that Brett and I thought about doing a big joint fundraiser, and sharing it with another charity.

“Brett mentioned St Mary’s Hospice, which is a great organisation and close to the hearts of a lot of people across the area.”

Supporters had the opportunity to donate online or at the club’s final game of the season, with matchday bucket collections taking the overall tally to beyond £3,500.

We’d like to give a big shoutout to Devros Barbers for playing their part in such a worthwhile effort.

“It means a hell of a lot to support these two charities,” Carter added.

“I’ve experienced first-hand the amazing care that St Mary’s Hospice provides to so many families, so it was an easy choice to raise money for them alongside the Little Princess Trust.

“I couldn’t think of anything more heartbreaking than hearing your child had cancer, so raising money for not only the wigs but kinder treatments was an easy decision.

“My daughter actually donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust, so I mentioned it to Charlie a while ago and he seemed keen.

“The support we had was amazing, and I can’t thank people enough for playing their part in raising over £3,500!”
