Young hooker Aiden Doolan has joined Barrow Raiders on a deal until the end of the season.
Doolan previously represented Warrington Wolves at academy level, having come through the scholarship system at nearby Widnes Vikings.
During his time at Warrington, Doolan played alongside current Raiders outside back Luke Broadbent.
Leaving Warrington at the end of the 2023 season, he made the move to Australia to link up with South Sydney Rabbitohs – on the recommendation of former Warrington forward Tyrone McCarthy, who headed up the Rabbitohs’ pathways – on a ‘trial and train’ contract.
He spent a year Down Under before returning to the UK, playing for Widnes Vikings on trial earlier this year.
The 21-year-old featured twice for the Vikings then left the club, joining Betfred Super League side Huddersfield Giants on trial soon after. However, a hand injury cut short his time at the Giants before he was able to make an appearance.
The arrival of Doolan provides further depth at hooker, with Josh Wood set to miss the club’s upcoming fixtures due to a hamstring injury.
He goes straight into contention to make his debut away at Featherstone Rovers this Sunday.
“I’m happy to have sorted coming to Barrow for the rest of the year,” he said.
“It’s a great opportunity for myself, and I will do my best to play a part in helping the club finish in a good spot, come the end of the season.
“Hopefully we can cement our place in the play-offs – that’s the ultimate aim.”
Barrow Raiders head coach Paul Crarey said: “Terry O’Connor recommended Aiden to us, and we decided to bring him in to try and maintain our play-off position.
“He has trained with us already and fitted in really well. His attitude is fantastic and Luke Broadbent has been a big help getting him settled at the club.”
Director of rugby Andy Gaffney said: “In Aiden, we are getting a young, hungry player determined to prove his worth to this club.
“He is immensely grateful for the opportunity to come here, and likewise we are delighted to have him as part of our group.
“The fact that he was given a chance in Australia speaks volumes about his quality and potential, and I’m sure he’s a player who supporters will warm to very quickly.”
