Barrow Raiders get their 2022 Betfred Challenge Cup campaign underway this weekend as they travel to League 1 side Rochdale Hornets. 

Paul Crarey’s men, unbeaten in the league so far this season, will look to extend their recent good run of form and move one step closer to a trip to the capital on Saturday 28 May.

The Challenge Cup final has traditionally been played at Wembley Stadium since 1929, with the Raiders famously lifting the esteemed trophy in 1955.

This year, however, it will take place at the state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the competition marks the 125th anniversary of its first final in 1897.

The 1895 Cup final will make history as the first every rugby league match to be played at the ground, with kick-off at 12:00pm. This will form part of a double-header and will be followed by the Challenge Cup final at 3:00pm.

Sunday’s trip to the Crown Oil Arena will see the Raiders return to action for the first time in two weeks, with last weekend’s trip to Bradford Bulls postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The opposition

Betfred League 1 side Rochdale Hornets are yet to kick off their league campaign, despite having booked their place in the fourth round of the Betfred Challenge Cup thanks to a 36-16 victory over Midlands Hurricanes and a hard-fought 28-12 win over Lock Lane.

The Hornets, previously of the Betfred Championship, boast a number of high-profile names, including former Tonga and New Zealand forward Fuifui Moimoi and ex-Leigh Centurions full-back Gregg McNally.

Former Super League half-back Rangi Chase also holds the number six shirt at the club, although he has yet to feature for the Hornets in 2022.
