Emily Stirzaker has been appointed captain of Barrow Raiders Ladies ahead of the 2025 season.

Formerly vice-captain to Jodie Litherland, Stirzaker has been chosen to lead the group into their second season in Group 1 of the Betfred Women’s Super League.

Following Litherland’s decision to retire at the end of last season and take on a new role leading the club’s Under 19 women’s development team, head coach Amanda Wilkinson has opted to hand the captaincy to Stirzaker.

Stirzaker played a major role in the Raiders’ promotion and subsequent first season in the top group of the Women’s Super League, appearing in every game in both league and cup during the 2024 campaign, scoring three tries.

She has been a stand-out performer for her hometown club since returning to the club in December 2021.

“As I said when it was announced at training, it’s the best Christmas present ever,” Stirzaker said.

“As cheesy as that sounds, it’s true. I love playing for this team, and it’s a very proud moment to be named captain.

“It’s an honour and privilege to be chosen by Amanda, the staff and the players. As the saying goes, I’ve got big shoes to fill following Jodie’s captaincy.

“I’d like to thank everyone for the opportunity, and hope I can make my family, friends, team and supporters proud.”

Barrow Ladies head coach Amanda Wilkinson said: “Emily has shown great leadership skills as vice-captain over the last couple of years.

“For me, she’s a great role model and an inspirational player for her team-mates to look up to. So many people had come forward to say that they wanted Emily to lead the group, and I think it’s always important to listen to the players.

“She brings great energy and a great attitude, not to mention the fact that she is a fantastic player with real skill and experience.”
